The business diagnostic review methodology FINPYME was developed by the Inter-American Investment Corporation with the support of experts from the Spanish consulting firm IKEI. In 2000, FINPYME was launched as a pilot program in Bolivia and Chile with funding from the IDB’s Spanish Trust Fund. Fifty diagnostic reviews were performed during the pilot phase; participating companies subsequently received expert advice on how to improve their competitiveness.
With the admission of Korea as a member of the IIC in 2005, Korea and the IIC established the Korea-IIC SME Development Trust Fund. Support from this fund enabled the IIC to devote resources to the development of strategic initiatives such as FINPYME.
In 2006 and 2007, with funding from the Korea Trust Fund, the FINPYME methodology was updated by the Spanish firm ALPROALIA, and the initiative was launched in Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. As a result of the program’s success and the interest generated among other donor countries, the next phase of FINPYME launchings has been scheduled for 2009: five countries in the English-speaking Caribbean in the first quarter and Colombia in the second quarter. To date, Austria, Korea, and Spain have provided technical assistance funds for FINPYME.
